Jet Skiing & Parasailing
When engaging in high-thrill water sports like jet skiing and parasailing, the focus shifts heavily to safety, adherence to operator instructions, and protecting yourself from the sun and water. These activities are generally short in duration and managed by an outfitter.
Here’s what travelers need for Jet Skiing & Parasailing:
What to Bring/Prepare for Jet Skiing & Parasailing:
- Swimwear: A comfortable swimsuit or board shorts is your primary attire.
- Rash Guard/Swim Shirt: Highly recommended for both activities. It provides excellent sun protection (especially important when on the water with high UV reflection) and prevents chafing.
Sun Protection (High SPF, Water-Resistant):
- Sunscreen: Apply generously and frequently, especially to areas exposed to the sun and water.
- Lip Balm with SPF.
- Water-Friendly Hat (with a chin strap): If you can wear one securely for jet skiing, it’s good. For parasailing, it’s often not allowed or will blow off.
- Sunglasses (with a retainer strap): Polarized sunglasses are great for glare, but ensure they are very securely strapped on or left behind, as they are easily lost.
- Water Shoes/Sandals with a Secure Strap (for Jet Skiing): Protect your feet when launching/landing or if you’re in shallow water. Avoid flip-flops that will easily come off. For parasailing, you might be barefoot or wear secure sandals.
- Towel: A beach towel or quick-drying travel towel for after the activity.
- Water Bottle (Reusable): Stay hydrated before and after, as you’ll be in the sun and exerting yourself.
- Dry Bag/Waterproof Pouch: For anything you need to keep absolutely dry (e.g., wallet, phone, car keys). This will likely be left on shore or with the operator, not taken on the jet ski or up in the air.
- Waterproof Camera (e.g., GoPro with secure mount): If you want to capture the experience, ensure it’s specifically designed for water sports and securely attached to you or the equipment. Many operators offer photo/video packages.
- Hair Tie/Band: If you have long hair, tie it back securely to prevent it from getting in your face or tangled.
- Motion Sickness Medication (if prone): Especially for parasailing, as the rocking motion can induce nausea for some. Take it well in advance.
- Booking Confirmation/ID: For checking in with the operator.
What NOT to Bring on the Activity Itself:
- Loose Jewelry: Rings, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets can snag, get lost, or cause injury.
- Glasses (unless secured): Unless you have a very secure strap and are comfortable with the risk of loss, it’s often best to leave them.
- Phones (unless in a certified waterproof case AND secured): High risk of loss or water damage.
- Wallets, Keys, Cash: Leave these in a secure locker or with a trusted person on shore.
Etiquette and Responsible Behavior for Jet Skiing & Parasailing:
- Listen to Your Instructor/Operator (Always!): Pay close attention to the safety briefing and follow all instructions from the staff. They are in charge of your safety.
- Understand Hand Signals (Parasailing): Learn any hand signals the parasail operator uses for communication while you’re in the air.
- Respect Safety Zones & Speed Limits (Jet Skiing): Adhere to designated riding areas, no-wake zones, and posted speed limits.
- Maintain Safe Distance: Keep a safe distance from other jet skis, boats, swimmers, and the shore. Avoid dangerous maneuvers.
- Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Constantly scan for other water users, obstacles, and changing conditions.
Minimize Environmental Impact:
- No Littering: Never throw anything into the water.
- Respect Wildlife: Avoid disturbing marine life. Do not chase or harass animals.
- Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen: If in a marine environment with coral reefs.
- Be Considerate of Others: Avoid excessive noise or aggressive riding that could disturb other people on the water or nearby beaches.
- Report Issues: If you notice any equipment malfunctions or unsafe practices, report them immediately to the operator.
- Have Fun Safely! Enjoy the thrill, but always prioritize safety.
By being well-prepared and adhering strictly to safety guidelines, you’ll have an exhilarating and memorable experience jet skiing or parasailing.
