Mountain Biking:
When hitting the trails for mountain biking, preparation is key for safety, comfort, and an enjoyable ride. The gear you bring will depend on the length and technicality of your ride, but certain essentials are universal.
Here’s what travelers need for Mountain Biking:
What to Bring/Prepare for Mountain Biking:
- Properly Tuned & Maintained: Crucial! Brakes, gears, tires, and suspension (if applicable) should all be in good working order.
- Appropriate Type: Cross-country, trail, enduro, downhill – choose a bike suited for the terrain you’ll be riding.
Safety Gear (Non-Negotiable):
- Helmet: Mandatory. A well-fitting, certified bike helmet is the most important piece of safety gear.
- Gloves: Padded cycling gloves improve grip, prevent blisters, and offer protection in a fall.
- Eye Protection: Sunglasses or clear glasses to protect your eyes from sun, dust, bugs, and debris.
- Knee & Elbow Pads (Recommended): Especially for technical trails or if you’re a beginner.
Cycling-Specific Clothing (Quick-Drying & Durable):

Hydration:
- Water Bottle(s): Mounted on your bike frame.
- Hydration Pack/Bladder: Often preferred for longer rides as it carries more water and allows hands-free drinking. Bring ample water!
Snacks/Nutrition:
- High-energy, easily digestible snacks (energy bars, gels, fruit, nuts) to keep you fueled, especially on longer rides.
Navigation:
- Map (Physical or Digital): A trail map of the area.

- Small Backpack: To carry all your essentials.
Etiquette and Responsible Behavior for Mountain Biking (IMBA’s Rules of the Trail):
- Ride Open Trails Only: Respect trail closures and avoid trespassing.
- Leave No Trace: Pack out everything you pack in. Don’t litter. Stay on established trails to prevent erosion and protect vegetation.
- Control Your Bike: Always ride within your limits. Maintain a safe speed and be prepared for the unexpected.
Yield to Others:
- Bikers Yield to Hikers & Equestrians: Announce your presence politely (“Biker back!”).
- Downhill Rider Yields to Uphill Rider: The uphill rider typically has the right of way.
- Never Scare Animals: Give animals ample room. Don’t chase or harass them. Control your pets if they are with you.
- Plan Ahead: Know your equipment, your ability, and the area you’re riding. Be prepared for changing weather conditions.
- Communicate: Use verbal warnings (“On your left!”, “Rider up!”), bell, or hand signals to alert others.
- Be Polite: A friendly “Hello” and smile go a long way.
By being well-prepared, safe, and respectful of the trails and other users, you’ll have an incredible mountain biking adventure.
